NEW ALBUM ‘COCOON’ OUT NOW

Seamlessly weaving together propulsive acoustic elements, rich vocal harmonies, and ethereal, electric textures, Ptarmigan’s third album Cocoon was produced the band’s own Sam Gleason (Tim Baker, Charlotte Cornfield, The Hidden Cameras) and welcomed the collaboration of outside artists Evan Cartwright (The Weather Station, Andy Shauf), Isa Burke (Lula Wiles), and Robert Alan Mackie (Bella White, Aerialists).

The nine songs on Cocoon are bound together by an exploration of the concept of home, drawing listeners into a rich inner world of science fiction, fantasy, and loss and family hardship. From an alien stranded on a strange but beautiful planet, to stories of modern urban isolation, to the Depression-era Canadian prairies, the album portrays vivid characters within their living and shifting centres. The visceral pull, storytelling and haunting melodies of traditional folk executed with progressive production and experimental flair create a refreshing take on the oft-conservative indie folk genre.

Recorded at the Lincoln County Social Club in Toronto and produced by James Bunton (Donovan Woods, Evening Hymns), Ptarmigan's self-titled follow-up album explores both the process of artistic creation and the fragility of divisions between past, present and future. The band delivers complex and evocative musicality, carving out meaning with lyrical allegory and texturally layered sound. Calling to mind celestial charts, sweeping windstorms, and otherworldly wanderings, these are songs that invite dreamscapes. Modern in their originality, shaded with medieval feeling, Ptarmigan is an anthology of an undefined time. Music and Lyrics © Ptarmigan (2016) SOCAN.

The result is a songbook which is highly inventive, melodic, and poetic, and which explores the shifting boundaries between the human, the natural, and the surreal.
